Polarized luminescence from self-assembled, aligned, and cleaved supramolecules of highly ordered rodlike polymers

A hierarchical self-assembly in comb-shaped supramolecules of conjugated rodlike polymers is reported. The supramolecules consist of poly~2,5-pyridinediyl!, acid dopants, and hydrogen bonded alkyl side chains. A thermotropic smectic state with an exceptionally large coherence length is formed without additional solvent. This allows facile overall alignment resulting in high dichroism and polari...

Fabrication of "hairy" colloidosomes with shells of polymeric microrods.

Novel colloidosome microcapsules with aqueous gel cores and integral shells of rodlike polymeric particles have been prepared and characterized. The synthesis is based on templating water-in-oil emulsions stabilized by rodlike particles followed by gelling of the aqueous phase, dissolution of the oil phase in ethanol, and redispersion of the obtained colloidosome capsules in water. Such capsule...

Probing a self-assembled fd virus membrane with a microtubule.

The self-assembly of highly anisotropic colloidal particles leads to a rich variety of morphologies whose properties are just beginning to be understood. This article uses computer simulations to probe a particle-scale perturbation of a commonly studied colloidal assembly, a monolayer membrane composed of rodlike fd viruses in the presence of a polymer depletant. Motivated by experiments curren...

Polydomain growth at isotropic-nematic transitions in liquid crystalline polymers.

We studied the dynamics of isotropic-nematic transitions in liquid crystalline polymers by integrating time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations. In a concentrated solution of rodlike polymers, the rotational diffusion constant D(r) of the polymer is severely suppressed by the geometrical constraints of the surrounding polymers so that the rodlike molecules diffuse only along their rod direction...

A kinetic Zipper model and the assembly of tobacco mosaic virus.

We put forward a modified Zipper model inspired by the statics and dynamics of the spontaneous reconstitution of rodlike tobacco mosaic virus particles in solutions containing the coat protein and the single-stranded RNA of the virus. An important ingredient of our model is an allosteric switch associated with the binding of the first protein unit to the origin-of-assembly domain of the viral R...
